As we begin our 14th year producing sustainably grown heirloom vegetables and herbs, we would like to welcome Steven and Claudia Townsend to the vegetable farm!
Steven and Claudia met back in 2000 while they were going to Hocking College in Southeastern Ohio. In 2003 they followed the rolling hills of Ohio down through the Appalachian mountains to land east of Asheville NC. There they married and started their family - welcoming sons August in 2007 and Orion in 2012.
Steven worked in landscape and construction while Claudia worked as a teacher. They owned their home with a small garden, but were looking to connect with the land in a more meaningful way. When the federal farm bill was passed in 2014 allowing for the cultivation of hemp, Claudia became engaged as an advocate for hemp through a national grassroots organization – Hemp History Week.
The search for land and farming knowledge began! She also created a garden club at her school using a great local resource ASAP – Appalachian Sustanible Agriculture Project, as well as going to the Organic Growers School Conferences and completing the Farm Beginnings program in 2016. They found our Sanders Ridge Farm through NC Farm Link and moved to Boonville in the fall of 2018. We are SO excited to have them here and their willingness to learn and grow with Neil and I.
Our plan is to continue our legacy of producing sustainably grown vegetables and herbs, and they will add flower production in 2019. We will add an industrial hemp enterprise for fiber and grain when the timing is right. The sun is just rising on their farm dreams and we are so blessed to have their engery and insight !
