I didnt have a lot of time to post much News from the Farm in 2014...
The year started off pretty bad. In addition to the damage to the high tunnels (photos below) from the heavy snowfall and ice, the extreme cold temps during the "Polar Vortex" resulted in the loss of about 1/3 of the grapevines in the vineyard...
Despite the rough start, the rest of the growing season was STELLAR! Lots of wonderful vegetables, nice (but smaller) grape harvests - and good weather and health. Once we rebuilt and replanted (whew!) the year took off and flew by. The weather was good, vegetable harvests were plentiful, bug and weed pressure was minimal, we made some outstanding wines, and traffic to the winery, restaurant, and farmers markets was WAY UP over 2013!
But the BEST thing to happen in 2014 was our partnership with Chef Christian Froelich. Christian took over the restaurant at Sanders Ridge in August. We are SO fortunate to have someone with his talent, passion, management skills and experience running the restuarant, catering, and special event businesses. Thanks to Chef and to Jennifer Hiatt, Neil's daughter - who is managing the winery, zip line and cabin businesses, I hope to be able to have more time to devote to the farm and to farm outreach activities such as workshops and tours, markets, and helping others interested in sustainable gardening and farming!
