Farm Newsletter   April 27, 2008

Hi Folks,

Its Sunday evening and I have just come in from sitting on the front porch with the cats and dogs watching and listening to the most wonderful and peaceful rain I have experienced here on the farm in a long long time.  Slow, gentle, warm.  Just enough to give everything a good drink – then a pause to let everything soak in – then starting up again.   Thank you Mother...  So far – you have provided such a wonderful spring and good start for the gardens and this season – and we are very grateful…

News from the Farm
Well, A LOT has been happening as you can expect this time of year on the farm.  We spent every possible minute preparing the beds that were dry enough to work – and then either setting out transplants (238 tomato plants) or direct seeding sun-loving veggies (okra, corn, beans, edamame) and when it was too hot or wet to be outside, we were seeding, transplanting, potting up and seeding, planting , transplanting, potting up –  well you get the picture – and that will BE the picture for at least another 2-3 weeks. (AND, as soon as the sun comes out after this nice rain,  we will need to add hours of WEEDING, weeding and more weeding to the daily tasks!)

So far, it looks like we are on track for a May 6th start date for delivery.  Don’t hold me to it – but I am pretty sure that we will have enough to make up a small first harvest/delivery.  Many things are looking like they will be ready to go – but it all depends on weather the days are above normal,  normal,  or below (temperature wise)…   I’ll keep you posted - but  two things that I KNOW I will be able to deliver on May 6th – at the very least – will be EGGS and vegetable plants…

We moved the girls and their egg mobile recently to an especially lush spot on the farm (an area where Neil piled year old cow and horse poo last fall) and they have been having a field day (sorry) gobbling up the fresh amaranth and lambs quarter sprouts (aka weeds) and have since been laying like crazy.

I also have several varieties of vegetable and herb plants available for sale (tomato, pepper, and basil)For details see below.

Delivery Information – Locations/Days/Times
As I mentioned above, I am shooting for May 6th as the first delivery (will know for sure by the end of this week) - but I am still working out the details for several of the delivery locations and need your help.  Here’s the scoop

Winery and Vineyard News

Neil has taken two more huge loads of timbers to the timber frame craftsmen to carve and notch.  We met with the contractor last Wednesday for briefing on the schedule - and it is looking like they will be "raising" the timber frame structure within a month. So much to still nail down/plan for - but I'll let you know more next week. (It might be a fun thing to watch - if anyone is interested...)
