Hi Folks,

What a glorious morning!  We had a pretty big shower (that we DIDN’T really need) last night - but things look so refreshed and clean this morning it’s hard to grump.  We worked like CRAZY people last week - right up until 5:30 last night.  Much of last week was spent cleaning the beds of old debris, taking down trellis posts and fencing, and re-amending the big greenhouse with composted leaves, greensand, colloidal phosphate and lime.  We double-dug the entire greenhouse into fluffy fresh new beds.  In them, we planted Swiss Chard, Beets, and Broccoli (all of which I would have RATHER planted outside - but couldn’t since it has still not dried enough to get the beds outside prepped).  On Saturday afternoon, even though the soil was still not as dry as I would normally want to work it - we went ahead and prepared 2 outside beds in the Big garden and then Saturday evening and yesterday (in between sprinkles), we planted them out with Sugar Snap Peas, Red Cabbages, and more Broccoli.  I WISH it would have been dry enough to get some potatoes out too - but we tucked them away in crates under the house to (hopefully) stay dormant a little while longer.  With last night’s rain and more coming tonight - it will be several weeks before they can go anywhere…

I wish I had had a time lapse camera on the farm the last 7 days.  The water-logged pasture went from gray-brown to brilliant green - almost while we watched.  The cows and chickens have been frisking around - running from one corner of the pasture to the other - like they were afraid they’d miss some fresh new sprout.  (This morning, many of them were running a little “loose and juicy”, I noticed… They ALL could use a dose of Pepto - as the new grass is like eating Mars Bars to them...)

So we have made up a little lost time garden-wise - and that makes me pretty happy.  (To see some photos, go here: http://www.sandersridge.com/farm/farm_notes/march2010/slideshow.htm)  There is still so MUCH more to do and to tell you about - but I have GOT to go inside today and work on taxes and all the OTHER paperwork that has been piling on my desk up at the winery while I was out playing in the dirt.

So - for now - Here’s the NEWS in High-Spots!

EGGS and PASTURED RAISED MEATS ARE AVAILABLE THIS WEEK for delivery into Winston-Salem.  My farm friends Cynthia Glascoe has eggs out the yazoo - she says, and Julie Pendry's freezers are full to the max with meat.  Eggs are available @$3.50 per doz.   Fresh pork sausage is available @ $4.00 lb. and hamburger is $3.50lb. Call Cynthia Glasscoe @ 336-699-2677 for eggs and Julie Pendry @ 336-699-3556 for meat. They will be responsible for coordination of a drop-off location in Winston…
